Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP)
Procedure
- An endoscopic (telescopic) operation done through the male urethra to resect obstructing prostate tissue. A larger channel is created through the prostate gland and flow is improved.

Duration
- 30-60 minutes

2-3 days stay in hospital
Preparation
- 6 hours fasting prior

Cease Aspirin a week prior

Cease Anti platelet medications (Iscover, Plavix) 10 days prior in consultation with your physician
Risks
- Haematuria - Light intermittent bleeding with mild dysuria (burning during micturition) is expected up to 2 weeks post surgery

Retrograde ejaculation (>90%) - Loss of ejaculation is expected. However erections and orgasm are generally unaltered

Stricture (2%)
- Incontinence (< 0.5%)
- Urinary tract infection (3%)

Recurrent BPH (5%)
